  • 1. Hold it up

Hold the shear by the finger ring with the tips pointing at the ceiling. Keep the still blade vertical.

  • 2. Lift and let go

Lift the thumb ring until the blades make a cross, then let it drop under its own weight. Don't help it.

  • 3. Read the result

It should stop about two-thirds of the way closed. Slams shut: too loose, and the blades will fold the hair. Barely moves: too tight, and you're fighting friction all day.

Where Most Barbers Start

Set the tension right, clean the pivot, and if it still drags, it's the shear. These are the ones working barbers and stylists reach for every day.

Belfast Design. North American Support.

Quartered Steels began in Belfast in 2015, built by people who cut hair for a living and wanted better shears without the elitist price tag. Over 20,000 pairs later, Quartered Steels North America is run by Mason Denton, a machinist and toolmaker and the owner of 44 Shears. You get a US phone number, a US email address and someone who knows the tool inside out.
